Set out a variety of paints and different “brushes” for the children to experiment with in the Art Center. Show them how to use sponges, fingers, cotton balls, or stamps to paint. Encourage them to mix the colors together and discuss the results. Once dried, hang the pictures in a classroom art gallery for all to see.
This activity will help the children use their small muscle groups as they explore different art mediums. They will build their observation skills, learn to work with and near other children, and become more independent by making choices.

Challenge the children to compete in races. Have them ride, hop, gallop, run, or skip from one side of the playground to the other. Join the children in the races, and focus on finishing the races not winning them.
Children will build their large muscles as they compete with themselves and others. They will build their self-esteem as they realize they can finish something they have started.

Help the children learn to peddle the tricycles rather than pushing them with their feet. First, have them put their feet on the pedals and slowly push them around. Point out how their feet are moving as they go. Next, encourage them to move the pedals themselves. Celebrate with them when they have completed the task.
Children will build their confidence as they improve their gross motor skills. They will build their independence and their trust in you.
